Karen Barbour, founder and president of The Barbour Group, LLC is a veteran of the surety bonding industry, starting her career in surety as a home office bond underwriter in 1985, where she is well known as an innovator and expert within the industry.

With decades of construction experience in managing employees, project management, accounting, and internal communication processes prior to and during her many years at Barbour Construction dba Specialized Metals, Debby with her executive skill sets helped co-found BG in 2002 as its Vice President of Operations. Debby’s expertise and support created the infrastructure needed for Karen Barbour to be macro focused in building the agency. Her ability to streamline efficiencies gave rise to BG’s stellar reputation in customer service. Debby controls the processing of all legal documents, invoicing, requests from markets and clients, and BG’s internal operations. Debby’s work ethic and integrity has won her exponential respect by BG, its clients and markets.

An experienced surety broker and Head of BG’s Insurance Sales division, Chris is valued by his clients as a key external advisor adept in creating custom bonding and insurance solutions that helped The Barbour Group achieve a 325% overall growth rate. Chris’s service approach is focused on positioning clients for growth and navigating risk. A defense and aerospace client remarked: “Because we are a dynamic organization that needs to quickly respond to opportunities, Chris’s continuous advice and input helps us maintain the right mix of commercial insurance products and risk awareness … we trust and rely on him that much.” Chris also gives back to the community helping children afflicted with neuromuscular disease and has served as Chairman of the Board for a prominent local non-profit company.
Head of Small Contractor Programs
A graduate from Stevenson University, Stacey began working full time for BG during college in 2008. We convinced Stacey to be an integral part of BG while she was working for a Fortune 500 firm part time. Stacey’s skill sets in accounting and technology enabled BG to become nearly paperless, organizing our internal processes at every level. Stacey’s intrapreneurial skills led her to create profitable commercial and small contractor bonding programs for BG, while assisting with front-line underwriting analysis that includes tracking progress of projects for our major clients. She also assists with marketing for the agency and its affiliated company, BG Network, LLC.
Vanessa has 15 years of combined experience in contracting and in construction accounting working for a notable construction oriented CPA firm in Baltimore. She will now extend her expertise in bookkeeping and financial consulting services to our clients and will provide in depth underwriting knowledge to our surety markets to optimize bonding capacity and overall growth. Vanessa is a certified expert in QuickBooks which knowledge will be vital for many small business contractors. Vanessa strives to mentor and develop contractors and can especially assist Hispanic contractors given her fluency in Spanish and passion for their culture.
Senior Surety Bond Specialist
Luann is responsible for new client business development. She is a detail-oriented financial analyst with over 20 years of experience as a surety agent in charge of surety production and service for a notable east coast agency in North Carolina before moving to Maryland in late December 2016. Luann has extensive experience in market negotiation, surety underwriting, capacity building, and risk assessment all underscored by a strong sense of urgency. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Campbell University and attained her Bachelors of Arts degree in Accounting while working full-time.
